WATER PARKS: WATER PARK OF AMERICA Previous Case Study Next Case Study

LOCATION:

DOMESTIC

SITUATION:

The Wirth Companies was looking to create an indoor water park that would give its visitors the experience of traveling through the natural wonders of Minnesota. This includes the cascading falls of Gooseberry Falls State Park, the wandering St. Croix River, and the Split Rock Lighthouse on Lake Superior. The challenges to create the plant habitat began with crafting large sized replica products to give scale to this 70,000 square foot park. In addition, a desire for native plant species and meeting the municipality’s stringent fire codes added to the challenge.

INITIATIVES:

Commercial Silk Intl’s design team worked closely with the project’s theme design company to carry out their vision. The scale was solved by building massive Birch and Pine trees, which also became very effective in masking out the sizable columns. These large trees also created more intimate spaces between the features of the Water Park for picnic type eating areas. The understory plant material also strengthened the Minnesota theme as authentic reproductions.

RESULTS:

This Minnesota experience was successfully designed, built and installed. It was completed on time and within budget parameters, and it satisfied the fire official's code requirements.
