Reading Nature
In order to compose a scene that reads like real nature, you must understand the forces and patterns at work in the organic world. Identifying Groundcover, Massing, Texture, and Canopy elements will help you understand your own greenery needs, and get you started on the first steps toward an authentic green experience.

Groundcover
Ferns, Ivy, Moss, Low Grass
The smallest and lowest of plants, 4” to 8” in height. The purpose in addition to filling space is to break the boundary of the planter. Freestanding or built up with other components, Groundcover sets an immersive bed for additional vertical layers.

Massing
Bushes, Shrubs, Tall Grass
Wide or voluminous plans and bushes that cover a significant area. Including sufficient massing elements is essential for a natural and full-looking display. These are typically the elements that define foot traffic flow, and fine tune the shape and direction of your environment.
Browse Boxwood
Texture
Grasses, Cacti, Foliage Sprays
Taller layers that break the rigidity of the planter, creating a sense of wild and organic freedom. These plants are often striking and familiar, and define the character of a composition by creating a pattern or texture in the negative space above the plant line.

Canopy
Trees and Tall Plants
Trees, and anything else that stands 6 feet or taller. These varieties define the upper limit of your experiential space, and can block out the sight of open deck ceilings and close the space in.
